3D printing involves creating objects using specialized printers that utilize filament instead of ink. This filament, an additive material, forms objects by printing them in consecutive, bonded layers. While many filaments are plastic-based, some are made from wood, nylon, or metal. 3D printing is highly efficient for producing 3D renditions of architectural blueprints, custom figurines, or sturdy product prototypes. All you need is a 3D printer and filament, both of which are available at reputable 3D printing stores.
You can also 3D print at home by purchasing a 3D printer online or from a local store. Renting a printer is another option if you only need it for a short period. While 3D printers have become more affordable over the past decade, they are still advanced pieces of hardware. Quality printers typically cost between €250 and €500, and you will also need filament, which costs around €30 per 1 kg spool, as well as the necessary software and design skills to create a model. Ignoring the factors of design experience and software, producing a quality product would cost at least a few hundred euros. If you need one to several hundred models, it might be more cost-effective to contact us instead.
First, you need a CAD file, which tells the 3D printer exactly what to print and requires specialized software. If you’re new to 3D printing and unsure how to create a CAD file, we recommend contacting an Irish 3D printing service. We’ll discuss your design details and create the CAD file for you. After your approval, you’ll receive your order within approximately three days.
For those who prefer to create their own CAD files, we recommend using SketchUp by Trimble. It’s user-friendly and completely free. When sending us your CAD file, please ensure it is in .STL format.
